How to Match a Print at Seams
Matching a print at seams can be a chore. But water soluble tape and stitching from the right side can help.
How to match a print to create width:
- Press under a raw edge.
- Lay the turned edge on top of the piece you want to match it with.
- Line up the print. Move the top fabric aside and stick double-sided water soluble tape to the bottom fabric along the seam line. Reposition the top fabric, sticking the two fabrics together.
- Place a pin about every twelve inches, to reinforce the tape, if you have a large piece of fabric. This example is a tablecloth. So there are 60 inches of print to match.
- Topstitch close to the seamline, being careful that the fabric does not shift the print out of alignment.
- Turn the fabric over and finish the edges.
If you like decoration with French Country prints, you may be doing this a lot. I’ll post a completed picture of the tablecloth once I get it out of the dryer. I like to wash the water soluble tape out before hemming the edges.

What a neat idea! Bought some prints recently at Ikea that I had considered sewing together for a bag or top so can really use this idea.
