French Market Bag in Upholstery Fabric

Published by christinem at 10:39 am under sewing Edit This

Fabric type can make all the difference in how your project looks.  These bags were made from upholstery fabric purchased from the thrift shop.  Typically, I would not make a shopping bag from upholstery fabric, since it tends to be expensive. But, since it was thrifted, the price was right.

This is the same Simplicity pattern, 2806, that I used to make the shopping bags .  You can see that they look entirely different.  I think I could even put a pretty broach on one and take it out on a weekend trip.

And to give you an idea of the cavernous size of these bags, here’s a photo with a small four year old.  See how she could almost fit inside the bag?

Sewing notes:

  • When using a heavier fabric than recommended by the pattern, make straps a bit wider so that you will be able to turn them.
  • Using heavy fabric can make your bag heavy.  These bags are heavy even when empty.  On the up side, they can be stuffed full with canned goods without fear of breaking.
  • Upholstery fabric ravels - at least this one did - finish edges accordingly.
